Overview & Objectives
An evidence-based approach to TMD diagnosis and management for all dentists regardless of their experience or specialty. Friday topics include: TMD history / examination / neuromuscular evaluation, a practical approach for the patient encounter, muscle disorders - evaluation, diagnosis & clinical implications, joint disorders - evaluation, diagnosis & clinical implications. Saturday topics include: neurophysiology of pain, oral appliance therapy, psychological considerations in the management of TMD, TMD management - physical self-regulation, the role of physical therapy in TMD management, and pharmacology for TMD (including use of neurotoxin).
After participating in this course, participants should have an increased understanding of the complex neurophysiology of pain; be better able to evaluate a medical history with regards to TMD; and have an increased knowledge of the diagnosis and management of the patient encountering orofacial pain.
Presenter(s):

A. Dale Ehrlich, MS, DDS, MAGD, Diplomate ABOP is chairman of the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry and Biomaterials at LSU School of Dentistry and a retired Captain in the Dental Corps, US Navy. He earned his DDS at Indiana University and completed a fellowship in orofacial pain at the University of Florida Craniofacial Pain Center. At the Naval Postgraduate Dental School, Dr. Ehrlich established the Orofacial Pain Postgraduate Program for the Navy Dental Corps and served as the first specialty leader for temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain. Dr. Ehrlich is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain and a Diplomate of the American Board of General Dentistry.

Gary D. Klasser, DMD, Cert. Orofacial Pain obtained his dental degree from the University of Manitoba (Canada). He also obtained a certificate in orofacial pain from the University of Kentucky and completed a fellowship in Oral Medicine/Oral Oncology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Klasser is a professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at Louisiana State University, School of Dentistry. He has published numerous peer reviewed scientific articles, as well as contributing many chapters to various textbooks and serves as an associate editor/editorial reviewer for a number of journals. He is also co-editor of several textbooks related to oral and facial pain and is a Past-President of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain.

Christopher J. Spencer, DDS, Cert. Orofacial Pain has been active in the field and specialty of Orofacial Pain since his two-year fellowship at the University of Florida College of Dentistry in Craniofacial Pain with Dr. Henry Gremillion. Following the completion of this program, he became the clinical director of the Parker Mahan Facial Pain Center. Dr. Spencer has provided clinical care of orofacial pain patients, education of both predoctoral and postdoctoral students, and orofacial pain consultations for many departments. He has also had the privilege as a clinician of advancing to an associate professor and professor levels at both the University of Florida and then the LSU Health Sciences Center College of Dentistry. Dr. Spencer is grateful for the opportunity to publish multiple articles in peer reviewed journals and book chapters as part of LSU’s orofacial pain group. He is presently an adjunct faculty member at LSU following retirement and continues to teach in the Orofacial Continuum and lecture.

Charles R. Carlson, PhD, Diplomate ABPP is professor emeritus of psychology and dentistry at the University of Kentucky (UK). He served as director of behavioral medicine and research at UK’s College of Dentistry Orofacial Pain Center. He earned his PhD in clinical psychology from Vanderbilt University and holds a diplomate from the American Board of Professional Psychology.

Eric Cedor, PT, DPT, ScD, COMT graduated from Louisiana State University's School of Allied Health with a master's degree in physical therapy in 2006. He went on to acquire a doctrine in physical therapy from the University of Mississippi, followed by a certification in manual therapy of the spine through IAOM-US in conjunction with his acquisition of a doctorate of science degree through the Health Sciences Center at Texas Tech University. He currently maintains an extensive outpatient practice while serving as director of the Movement Science Center physical therapy clinic in Covington, Louisiana. In addition, Eric is an adjunct faculty member who regularly lectures for both the physical therapy and dental schools within the LSU, Emory, Missouri State and Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady health science systems.
